artist statement

Spending time outdoors and in my studio are intrinsic to who I have become. Since a young child I have been captivated by nature and Man’s relationship with the wild. In the hours spent outdoors I find solace from the chaotic and unpredictable world in which I live. I Walk in and observe the woods, meadows, mountains, lakes and rivers. I focus deeply on being present, recognizing patterns, shapes and forms in what may appear to be a wild and chaotic landscape. My mind is constantly observing and deciphering through the filters of my many interests ranging from philosophy and religion to carpentry, architecture and conservation. In this process I form a connection, a sense, a memory of these places I find myself.  This, then, forms the essence of my compositions. In the arrangement of the various elements in my paintings I share this existential experience

In my work I am connected with nature and life in a multi dimensional and interrelated experience. I wrestle with the conflict between the destructive forces of civilization upon this wilderness and the inherent need within humanity for this same wilderness.
